But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.” Acts 16:37
In this chapter of Acts, Paul and Silas had found themselves in a predicament. They were going through the town spreading the gospel of God. A woman who had been possessed by a spirit that allowed her to tell the future began following them, shouting about what they were doing. Paul became annoyed with the woman and cast the spirit out of her. Well the woman was a slave and her owners now could not make any money off of her fortune telling, so they took Paul and Silas to the authorities. Their accusation was that the men were causing an uproar and trying to it the people to accept customs that are for unlawful for Romans to accept or practice. Of course, this wasn’t true, nevertheless they were beaten and thrown in jail. Instead of lamenting their situation, they began to sing praises to and worship God. As the story goes, at about midnight the prison was shaken by an earthquake and the prison doors were loosed. In the end, they were found to be innocent and the magistrates wanted to put the ordeal behind them quietly. However, Paul said not so! Y’all didn’t start this quietly so we aren’t leaving quietly!
Take a look at your circumstances:
Yes, they lied about you. They falsely accused you. They underestimated you. They got the crowd behind them in order to complete the set up. What they didn’t realize was they weren’t in charge. THEY were the pawns. Yes they put obstacles in your way, but God is going to make them your stepping stones! Yeah they threw dirt on your name but God has wiped it clean! They planned the set up, but they are about to watch you come up! They threw you in the dungeon but they are going to have to escort you out!!!
